Since 2011, Honda has set the benchmark for Japan’s kei-car class with the N-Box, a tall, boxy 3395 mm micro-van that has become the country’s best-selling passenger car for several consecutive years.
Design & Packaging
The N-Box packages a flat-floor cabin within Japan’s kei-car limits of 3395 mm length and 1475 mm width. Tall roof lines and sliding rear doors give passengers entry similar to a compact MPV. Under the floorboards, engineers squeezed in a front-mounted engine paired with either front- or four-wheel drive, delivering space-efficient practicality aimed squarely at urban traffic.
Three Generations
Honda launched the first N-Box in December 2011, replacing the long-running Vamos. A full model change arrived late 2017 with crisper lines and updated safety gear. The third generation, on sale from late 2022, brought mild-hybrid and turbo variants plus cosmetic revisions while retaining the original platform footprint.
Naming & Context
The “N” badge echoes the classic 1967–1972 N360, though today it signals New, Next, Nippon (Japan), and Norimono (vehicle). As the lead model in Honda’s four-strong kei family—N-Box, N-WGN, N-One, and N-Van—the N-Box continues to define the segment’s look and engineering priorities.
