Introduced in the late 1990s, the Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover that carved out a new foothold below the CR-V and helped popularize the B-segment utility class long before it became mainstream. Today it sits at the heart of Honda’s global SUV range, spanning three distinct generations.
History
The original HR-V debuted in 1998 and 1999 for global markets, packaged on the Honda Logo platform. It was arguably one of the earliest mass-produced subcompact crossovers, bridging city-car hatchback agility with raised ride height and available all-wheel drive. Despite disappearing from many markets for several years, the nameplate was revived in 2015, and by 2021 the third generation consolidated the HR-V as a core model across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Generations
First generation (1998–2006): offered with two gasoline engines and an unusual “Real-Time AWD” system that engaged the rear axle only when slip occurred. Second generation (2015–2021): moved to the Honda Fit platform, adding turbocharged and hybrid drivetrains and global safety packages such as Honda Sensing. Third generation (from 2021): adopts a longer wheelbase, frameless grille design, and switchable drive modes, while continuing to span petrol, hybrid, and (outside North America) e:HEV powertrains.
Positioning
Slotting below the CR-V and above the compact sedans in Honda’s lineup, the HR-V targets urban buyers who want higher seating, flexible cargo (Magic Seat folding rear bench in most trims), and economical running costs without the bulk of a larger SUV. It is marketed under the Honda Vezel name in several markets, particularly Japan.
