History
The fourth-generation CR-V was previewed in September 2011 as the CR-V Concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show, signaling the production direction less than three months before sales began. U.S. deliveries started in December 2011, while Japan saw the model introduced in November 2011 with retail availability the following month. It remained in production through 2018, when it was succeeded by the fifth-generation CR-V.
Market Significance
This generation was the first CR-V to be rolled out nearly simultaneously in North America and Japan, streamlining Honda’s global manufacturing footprint. By aligning launch timing across two of the world’s largest crossover markets, Honda maximized economies of scale and set monthly sales records in the United States during the early years of its run.
Generations
Positioned between the boxier third-generation 2006–2011 CR-V and the turbocharged fifth-generation that arrived for 2017, the 2012–2016 model borrowed larger proportions without losing the easy-drive character that had defined the nameplate since 1995. Precise exterior sculpting and lighter wheel-arch cladding reflected Honda’s push to modernize its SUV design language ahead of the 2020s electrification wave.
