First launched in 1995, the Honda CR-V quickly became a cornerstone of the compact crossover market; the current sixth-generation model (2022-) refines the formula with new architecture, more space and up-to-date powertrains.
Evolution to the Sixth Generation
From its origination in the mid-1990s, the CR-V has steadily grown in size, capability and sophistication. The sixth-generation 2022 redesign signals the biggest leap since the 2016 redesign, moving to the Honda Architecture (HA) platform that also underpins the eleventh-generation Civic. The switch trims weight, improves torsional rigidity and allows the CR-V to be produced in 5-seater and, for the first time outside Japan, 7-seater forms.
Design & Engineering
Visually, the new CR-V adopts a longer wheelbase and more squared-off stance, releasing extra rear-seat legroom and cargo volume. Slim LED headlamps and a pronounced grille give a sharpened, more SUV-like profile compared with softer earlier generations. Beneath the sheetmetal, the HA platform integrates a stiffer body shell, improved crash structure and mounts for both turbo-petrol and hybrid drivetrains without requiring structural changes.
Contemporary Positioning
With the sixth-gen, Honda positions the CR-V to fend off a crowded field that now includes everything from the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to numerous Korean and European newcomers. Offering two seating rows in most markets and a rare third-row option where needed keeps the CR-V competitive for growing households while maintaining the compact footprint that originally defined the segment.
