Between 2008 and 2021, Honda gave the ‘Clarity’ badge to a family of alternative-fuel sedans that tested every green-car route—first hydrogen, then battery-electric, finally plug-in hybrid—before production quietly ended in August 2021.
History
The lineage started with the 2008 FCX Clarity, a limited-lease hydrogen fuel-cell car offered mainly in California. In 2017 Honda rebooted the nameplate to span three drivetrains at once: the second-generation Clarity Fuel Cell, the Clarity Electric, and the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid. Sales were modest; global manufacturing ceased after model-year 2021, although U.S. fuel-cell leases were honored through 2022.
Design & Dimensions
All 2016-2021 Clarity variants rode on the same 4 895 mm-long body, 1 877 mm wide and 1 478 mm tall. A fastback roof and subtle rear wheel skirts aimed at aerodynamic efficiency; those skirts also make the Clarity the last production car (as of 2025) to retain fixed rear wheel covers.
Powertrain Variants
The 2017 reboot gave buyers three choices: a hydrogen fuel-cell stack with 5 kg compressed H₂ tanks, a 25.5 kWh battery-electric version with 89-mile EPA range, and a plug-in hybrid pairing a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine with a 17 kWh pack for 47 miles of electric-only driving.
Legacy
Despite modest sales, the Clarity program served as Honda’s technology incubator, previewing fuel-cell components later used in the Honda CR-V e:FCEV and establishing a large-scale plug-in hybrid architecture that influenced subsequent electrified Hondas.
