Honda Accord (first generation)

Launched in 1976 as Honda’s larger step up from the Honda 1300, the first-generation Accord redefined what an economical family sedan could offer, combining compact dimensions with unexpected comfort and frugal fuel use.
Design
Measuring just 4.1 m long and 1.62 m wide, the first Accord used a conventional three-box sedan silhouette with crisp, straight lines and large glass areas that belied its small footprint. At 1.36 m tall it sat unusually low for the era, lending it a planted stance and aiding aerodynamic efficiency. Inside, a full-width dashboard and high-quality plastics pushed the perceived value well beyond the car’s price class.
Engineering
The car rode on a newly developed CVCC (Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion) engine family—1.6 and later 1.8 liters—designed to meet early U.S. emissions standards without a catalytic converter. MacPherson-strut front suspension and a compact live-axle rear provided a nimble yet comfortable ride, while front disc brakes were still uncommon in this segment.
Generations
Marketed from 1976 through 1981, the inaugural Accord came initially as a two-door hatchback, with a four-door sedan added in 1977 and then a three-door hatchback variant. With each annual update Honda enlarged displacement, refined the chassis, and added features such as power steering and air conditioning, laying the groundwork for the next generation.
Legacy
By delivering reliability, low running costs, and surprisingly upscale amenities in a compact package, the first-generation Accord helped Honda gain critical footing in North America and Europe. It established the Accord nameplate that would go on to sell over 18 million units worldwide.
