Introduced in 1997, the Holden Commodore (VT) was the first model of the third-generation Commodore line, cementing its role as Holden’s flagship full-size sedan through to 2000. It is remembered as the final locally-built Commodore offered with a home-grown 5-litre V8.
History
Holden launched the VT in late 1997, replacing the VS generation that had been on sale since 1995. The VT focused on improved body strength and larger overall dimensions while retaining a familiar drivetrain package. Production of the core sedan range wrapped up in 2000, with the last 5-litre V8 engine builds finished slightly earlier for Statesman, Caprice and related utility derivatives.
Design
The VT adopted a smoother, more rounded aerodynamic profile compared to the more rectilinear VS. Alongside the mainstream sedan, the luxury-tinged Holden Berlina (VT) and Holden Calais (VT) expanded the model’s reach into premium family-car territory. A new-generation ute was notably absent—utility buyers relied on carry-over VS Series 3 versions until the later VX update arrived.
Legacy
Though superseded by the VX in 2000, the VT is often seen as the bridge between Australia’s indigenous large-car culture and the global platform era that followed. Its status as the last Commodore to run a locally built 5-litre V8 gives it cult standing among enthusiasts tracking the end of unique Holden engine manufacturing.
