Rolling out in 2006, the Holden Commodore (VE) was Holden’s bold billion-dollar swing at redefining the Australian full-size sedan. Seven model years of production turned it into a household staple before the line passed the baton to the VF in 2013.
History
Announced as a ground-up project, the VE marked the first truly new platform for the Commodore range since 1988. Billed internally as "Holden’s billion dollar baby", it arrived in August 2006 wearing crisp lines and a fresh rear-wheel-drive Zeta architecture. Sales ran through 2013, spanning sedans, longer-wheelbase variants, and the ever-popular Ute utility body, all built at Holden’s Elizabeth plant in South Australia.
Body Styles & Models
Buyers could choose between the core Commodore sedan, the extended-wheelbase luxury Holden Calais, and the middle-ground Holden Berlina. For tradies and weekend warriors, the separate Holden Ute ranged from work-focused trays to sporty SSV editions, all sharing the VE’s platform and drivetrains.
Legacy
The VE cemented the Commodore nameplate as Australia’s default family and fleet car through the late 2000s and early 2010s. Its Zeta architecture later underpinned global GM projects and helped re-establish rear-wheel-drive sedans in the brand’s DNA—right up until local production wound down with the VF after 2013.
