Built from 1991 to 1993, the VP-series Holden Commodore refined Australian family-car expectations after the VN and set predecessors to the 1993 VR facelift. It counts as the second step in the second-generation Commodore range.
History
Holden introduced the VP in September 1991, barely a year after the VN had established the new generation. The condensed life-cycle hints at intense competition in the large-car segment and Holden’s desire to repair early criticisms of the VN’s ride and refinement. Production wrapped by late 1992, clearing the path for the more comprehensive VR update.
Model Range
Core VP sedans and wagons covered fleet and family slots, while the executive-to-luxury spectrum broadened through the Holden Berlina (VP) and the flagship Holden Calais (VP). Shared underpinnings cut engineering cost but differing trim and equipment packages let Holden claim premium ground against Ford’s EA-EB Falcon series.
Short-Lived Impact
The VP’s two-year tenure left little time for major technical change; its chief role was to stabilise quality and bridge buyers to the safer, stiffer VR. Today, survivors are thin on the ground, yet the facelifted nose and cleaner dash mark it as the first clear step away from the square-edged 1980s styling that had lingered into the VN.
