Slotting between the V-63 and the eventual Series 341, the Cadillac Series 314 was an interim luxury model that carried Cadillac’s V8 lineage forward during the late 1920s as engineering priorities shifted within General Motors.
Generations & Positioning
Built on the modified GM C platform that underpinned its Type V-63 predecessor, the Series 314 bridged a critical gap before the arrival of the Series 341. While firm production dates remain undocumented, its displacement-based nomenclature signals evolutionary improvements over the 314.5 cu in V8 introduced with the Type 51.
Design & Engineering
Retaining the proven Cadillac V8 introduced in 1915, the Series 314 continued Cadillac’s strategy of incremental refinement: stronger chassis, quieter valve-gear, and subtly updated coachwork that aligned with late-1920s styling trends. The move to a larger bore and stroke in the successor Series 341 would soon render the 314 obsolete, but it ensured a seamless handing-off of tooling and supplier contracts within General Motors.
Legacy
Although overshadowed by breakthrough models that followed, the Series 314 served as the last transitional step before Cadillac standardized the Series/last-three-digits naming system. Collectors today regard surviving examples as the evolutionary midpoint between the brass-era Type V-63 and the more powerful, fully synchronized-transmission Cadillacs of the 1930s.
