Built by General Motors’ flagship division, the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham defined American luxury sedans from 1977 through 1986 before dropping the "Fleetwood" tag and carrying on as the Cadillac Brougham until 1992. Its ten-year run perfectly bridges the transition from classic chrome-laden cruisers to the quieter, downsized era of the mid-1980s.
History
Launched to replace the long-serving Cadillac Sixty Special, the Fleetwood Brougham debuted alongside Cadillac’s fleet-wide downsizing program. The new model carried the fussy Electra-esque tail lamps of the era yet retained full-size dimensions inside. In 1987 Cadillac quietly deleted the "Fleetwood" prefix, rebadging the car Cadillac Brougham and adding only minor trim and equipment tweaks through the final 1992 model year.
Design
Styling cues of the era included formal roofs with landau or vinyl half-pillars, upright hoods crowned by stand-up crests, and jewel-like rectangular headlamps. Wide color-keyed bumper caps eliminated the chrome battering-rams of earlier Cadillacs, while wire-wheel covers remained an orderable touch of opulence until the very end.
Legacy
After bowing for 1992, the Brougham badge vanished, clearing the way for both the front-drive reborn Cadillac Fleetwood and later the first rear-drive Cadillac Fleetwood of 1993. In collectors’ circles today, the slab-sided 1980-85 models and their pillow-tufted interiors best distill the decade’s love-it-or-hate-it luxury aesthetic.
