Introduced in the April 1975 pilot movie, the striped 1974–76 Ford Gran Torino served as partner to Detective Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson. Dubbed "Zebra Three" over police radio, the car endured tire-smoking chases, gunfire, and countless jumps, becoming as integral to the show as its human leads. Shooting took place around Southern California, giving viewers weekly handheld-camerawork hot pursuit sequences rarely seen on network television at the time.
Design and livery
Paint crews transformed a stock Torino into a rolling billboard: bright Tomato Red paint framed by a vector-graphic white stripe that ran along the flanks, over the roof, and down the rear quarters. Slot-style aftermarket mag wheels, hood pins, and dual exhaust tips completed the high-visibility ensemble, ensuring the car read instantly on small 1970s TV screens.
Cultural impact
Although never sold in showrooms, toy manufacturer Mego and Matchbox churned out miniature versions almost immediately; decades later, Hot Wheels and Johnny Lightning continue re-issues. The livery inspired real-world replicas at car shows and police-community events, and the phrase "Zebra Three" remains shorthand for an unmistakable undercover cruiser in fan circles and media retrospectives.
