History
Carroll Shelby’s Shelby American built the first run from 1965-1967 at its Venice, California and then Los Angeles facilities. When customer demand outstripped Shelby’s capacity, Ford took direct control in 1968 and continued limited production through 1970 under Ford Motor Company rather than Shelby American.
Design & Engineering
Each Shelby Mustang started as a stock Ford Mustang fastback before receiving comprehensive upgrades—larger brakes, tuned suspension, faster steering ratios, and potent V8s—intended to hunt Corvettes on both road and strip. Distinctive fiberglass hood scoops, stripes, and badging signalled the transformation from commuter to weekend warrior.
Legacy
By 1970 the Shelby Mustang program had distilled Ford’s Mustang platform into its most focused form of the era. The partnership ended when emissions and insurance realities made such raw output impractical, yet the 1965-1970 cars remain the benchmark against which all later Ford factory high-performance Mustangs are measured.
