Launched on December 26, 1985, the Mercury Sable replaced the rear-drive Marquis and dragged Mercury’s mid-size lineup into the front-wheel-drive era.
Origins
Ford created the Sable to sit between the Tempo and the top-tier Grand Marquis, adopting the new aerodynamic body style that debuted on the Ford Taurus. Its arrival signalled the end of the Marquis mid-size line and positioned Mercury firmly in the modern FWD market from 1986 onward.
Generations & Legacy
Over three decades the Sable survived multiple redesigns and badge-engineering cycles, finally bowing after 2009 to make room for the revived Mercury Montego. Along the way it served as fleet staple, family hauler and occasional police interceptor, leaving an imprint as Mercury’s longest-running mid-size nameplate.
