History
Debuting late in the 1962 model year, the S-55 was conceived to inject youthful speed appeal into Mercury’s full-size lineup. As Mercury shifted focus toward mid-size offerings in 1964-65, the nameplate vanished, only to be revived in March 1966 when dealers wanted a Monterey-based competitor for upscale Big-Three muscle. Both spans lasted just two production years, making original S-55s thin on the ground today.
Design & Powertrain
From the outside, the S-55 wore crisp two-door lines—either pillarless hardtop or convertible—shared with the Monterey, accented with color-keyed bucket-seat interiors, console shifters, and specific chrome “S-55” badges. Underhood choices centered on 390 and 427 V-8s, often paired with the same 4-speed manual and dual-quad induction packages found in Ford’s Galaxie, letting the big Mercury hit quarter-mile times competitive with its cross-town rivals.
Positioning & Legacy
Positioned above the regular Monterey but below the Marauder later introduced in 1963, the S-55 gave Mercury a direct Chrysler 300 alternative, albeit in smaller annual volumes. Its brief, two-generation lifespan left the badge as a cult favorite among Ford aficionados, and surviving convertibles and high-compression 427 cars are now prized entrants at concours and drag-strip reunions alike.
