Launched for 1995, the Mercury Mystique replaced the aging Topaz in Mercury’s U.S. lineup as a badge-engineered companion to the Ford Contour / first-generation Ford Mondeo. It served as the brand’s compact-four-door entry for North American buyers seeking European-influenced sizing and handling.
History & Positioning
Developed under Ford’s CDW27 global program, the Mystique shared nearly all of its structure and drivetrains with the Ford Contour. Arriving in dealerships for the 1995 model year, it took over from the Topaz and was built alongside Contour at Ford’s Kansas City, Missouri, and Cuautitlán, Mexico, plants. The model remained Mercury’s sole compact sedan until it was discontinued after the 2000 model year.
Design & Body Style
Offered only as a four-door sedan, the Mystique wore Mercury-specific chrome waterfall grille, reshaped fascias, and additional bright trim to distance it from the sportier-looking Contour. Inside, fake-wood appliqués and additional sound insulation aimed to deliver a more upscale feel, while the same Mondeo-derived dashboard provided ergonomic switchgear shared across the Atlantic.
Performance & Variants
Engine choices mirrored the Contour: a 125 hp 2.0 L Zetec I4 for the base GS and a 170 hp 2.5 L Duratec V6 in the up-market LS. A five-speed manual was standard on most trims, with an optional four-speed CD4E automatic. Suspension tuning favored ride comfort over the Contour’s sharper setup, reflecting Mercury’s traditional customer base.
