Resurrecting a 1970s nameplate, the third-generation Mercury Montego debuted for 2005 as Ford’s premium full-size sedan positioned above the Fusion. With Mercury retiring after the 2011 model year, the Montego remains the final expression of Ford’s Mercury division in the twenty-first century.
Return of the Montego
Originally launched in 1968 as a mid-size, the Montego badge sat dormant until Ford revived it in 2004 for the 2005 model year. Built alongside the Ford Five Hundred at Chicago Assembly, the 2005-2007 Montego used Volvo-derived architecture, offered front- or all-wheel drive, and occupied Mercury’s flagship sedan slot.
Mercury’s Swan Song
After the 2008 recession and Ford’s decision to shutter Mercury, the Montego was facelifted for 2008–2009 and rechristened Sable to align with Ford’s naming shuffle. Production continued until December 2008, making the Montego/Sable the last new Mercury model to roll off the line before the brand closed in January 2011.
Legacy of a Quiet Ending
Lacking a direct successor, the third-generation Montego occupies a narrow niche: a modern, safety-focused full-size Mercury that arrived just as buyers pivoted to crossovers. Today, it survives as an affordable used sedan distinguished by Volvo engineering and Mercury’s final badge.
