Between 1961 and 1963 the Mercury Meteor served as Mercury’s entry-level full-size sedan, a badge-engineered companion to the Ford Fairlane that brought Canadian Ford brand heritage to American showrooms.
Origin of the Name
The Meteor moniker had already existed north of the border as a distinct Ford of Canada marque during the 1950s; recycling it on a U.S. Mercury positioned the car as both space-age and value-oriented. The timing placed the Meteor alongside the similarly named but smaller Comet, letting Mercury cover two size classes with celestial branding while Ford capitalised on early-1960s aerospace enthusiasm.
Design & Positioning
Built on a Fairlane platform, the Meteor’s styling followed Mercury’s softer, more ornate cues—wider grille, additional brightwork, and the requisite twin tail-lamp treatment distinguishing it from its Ford sibling. Slotted one rung below the Monterey in Mercury’s range, it offered buyers a full-size cabin without stepping up to the pricier upper-tier offerings.
Production Lifespan
U.S. sales of the Mercury Meteor lasted just three model years, ceasing after 1963. Its disappearance coincided with a market pivot toward intermediates and compacts, leaving the Meteor a brief but noteworthy footnote in mid-century Mercury history.
