Sold only for the 2003–2004 model years, the Mercury Marauder is a high-performance derivative of Ford’s Panther-platform Grand Marquis that revives the historic Marauder nameplate. Its sudden reappearance gave Ford dealers a factory hot-rod version of the typically sedate full-size sedan.
Background
The original Marauder name was used on mid-60s Mercury full-size models with big-block engines; by 2002, Mercury decided to dust off the badge for a modern interpretation. Ford took the civilian Grand Marquis body-on-frame architecture and transformed it into a more menacing, blacked-out performance sedan aimed squarely at enthusiasts looking for rear-wheel-drive American muscle with four-door practicality.
Performance Engineering
Although sourced from the workaday Grand Marquis, the Marauder adopted upgraded suspension, brakes, and steering components from the Police Interceptor and the Crown Victoria LX Sport. A 4.6 L DOHC 32-valve V8—harvested from the Mustang Mach 1—replaced the SOHC 4.6, delivering 302 hp and 318 lb-ft through a 3.55:1 final-drive rear axle. Staggered 18-inch aluminum wheels, twin 2.5-inch exhaust outlets, and monochromatic paint marked it as far different from its taxi-cab cousins.
Sales & Legacy
Despite fanfare, just 11,052 units left the factory—3,991 in 2003 and 7,061 in 2004—making the modern Marauder another short-lived Mercury performance experiment. Its scarcity, combined with its muscular silhouette and cop-car suspension, has created a small but dedicated following on the collector market that prizes the Marauder's blend of comfort and unexpected speed.
