Launched in 1975, the Mercury Bobcat is the upscale Mercury version of the Ford Pinto subcompact, bridging economy and brand loyalty for North American buyers.
History
Mercury introduced the Bobcat for 1975 to give its dealerships a fuel-efficient entry-level model during the first energy crisis. Built alongside the Ford Pinto through 1980, it allowed loyal Mercury customers to downsize without leaving the brand. After six model years, the Bobcat was replaced by the front-wheel-drive Mercury Lynx.
Design
From the windshield back, the Bobcat mirrors the Ford Pinto’s body shell. Mercury differentiated it with a formal chrome grille, vertically ribbed taillamps, and plusher interior trim. Despite the modest 1,770 mm overall width, twin opera windows and vinyl roofs were offered to create a more upscale appearance.
Positioning & Legacy
The Bobcat fulfilled Mercury’s need for an affordable subcompact during a period of tightening emissions and rising fuel prices. Though sales were modest, it established Mercury’s practice of badge-engineering economy cars—a strategy that continued with the Lynx and later Tracers.
