Unveiled for the 1998 model year, the Ford ZX2 was the sport-coupe companion to the North American Escort line, filling the gap left when Ford Probe ended production and previewing the more modern Focus that would follow in 2000.
Background and Positioning
Based on the North-American Escort platform, the ZX2 arrived as a two-door coupe aimed at younger buyers seeking performance cues at an accessible price. Ford positioned it as the sporty halo of the Escort range between the 1997 demise of the Probe and the late-1999 launch of the Focus ZX3.
Design and Dimensions
The ZX2 wore unique bodywork: a fast roofline, sculpted side sills, and a distinctive honeycomb grille. At 4450 mm long, 1710 mm wide and just 1320 mm tall, it sat lower and appeared more athletic than the Escort sedan and wagon on which it was based.
Performance
A 2.0-litre 16-valve "Zetec" four-cylinder—new to the Escort family—gave the ZX2 a factory-rated top speed of 240 km/h, the highest in the U.S. Escort catalog. Suspension tuning followed suit with stiffer springs, larger anti-roll bars, and larger wheels to deliver the promised sporty character.
Generations and Run
Sold only in the 1998–2003 model years, the ZX2 remained visually unchanged save for color and equipment shuffles. After 2000 it was renamed simply “ZX2” and sold alongside the all-new Focus until production ceased in July 2003.
