Ford XL Falcon

Introduced in mid-1962, the Ford XL Falcon carried Ford Australia’s compact-car program forward just one year after the XK’s troubled launch. Its 18-month production run and modest upgrades bridged the gap until the thoroughly revised XM Falcon arrived.
History
Ford Australia unveiled the XL Falcon in July 1962, replacing the XK exactly one year after the brand’s first six-cylinder family cars reached local showrooms. By December 1964, 75,765 units had rolled off Broadmeadows and Geelong lines before the XM took over, giving the XL one of the shortest stints of any Falcon generation.
Design
Sheet-metal revisions were subtle: new full-length side spears, a deeper egg-crate grille and wider taillights below restamped rear fins nudged overall length to 4602 mm. Inside, the dashboard adopted circular instrumentation pods and a repositioned radio slot, while upholstery choices broadened to include ‘Surf’ vinyl two-tone schemes.
Performance
Carry-over engines consisted of the 144 ci (2.4 L) ‘Pursuit’ and 170 ci (2.8 L) ‘Super Pursuit’ inline-sixes, paired with three-speed manual or the two-speed Ford-O-Matic. Suspension—coil-sprung front, leaf-sprung rear—remained unchanged, but recalibrated dampers and slightly softer rear leaf rates addressed early XK ride complaints.
