Ford Thunderbird

The Ford Thunderbird rolled into showrooms for its eleventh generation, creating a retro roadster that revived the 1950s classic without a direct predecessor—just seven years after the tenth-gen had quietly bowed out.
Generations
After the tenth-generation Thunderbird ended in 1997, Ford waited until the 2002 model year to reveal the all-new eleventh generation. Built on the DEW98 platform shared with the Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-Type, this reboot featured a two-seat convertible body and styling cues that echoed the original 1955–1957 Thunderbird. The line ran through model-year 2005, after which no successor was developed.
Design & Features
Engineering focused on a nostalgic look with modern comforts: a removable hardtop roof panel, power-retractable cloth soft-top, and retro-style vents on the front wings. Inside, leather trim, a retro-shaped steering wheel, and an available chrome-accented interior package highlighted Ford’s intent to court buyers drawn to classic Americana.
Performance
The sole power-train was Ford’s 3.9-liter V8 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Output was rated at 252 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, giving the rear-wheel-drive roadster brisk if not neck-snapping acceleration befitting a cruiser rather than a sports car.
