Unveiled at the 2005 North American International Auto Show, the Ford SYNus was a one-off concept vehicle that pushed security and urban design in unusual directions, giving spectators a taste of Ford’s future-thinking long before most EV crossovers existed.
Origins
Spanish exterior designer Jose Paris and interior specialist Joe Baker shaped the SYNus for Ford, aiming to dramatize protective architecture in a world of congested city streets. Without any predecessor or suggested production timeline, the vehicle was built purely as a rolling design study for auto-show watchers in Detroit.
Design Statement
The boxy silhouette and armored-van proportions came finished in matte silver, hinged with a vault-like rear door that swung open like a safe. Inside, a cocooning cabin featured pivoting front seats, recycled aluminum details and two large LCD screens that turned the interior into a mobile lounge.
Concept Legacy
Although never slated for production, the SYNus influenced Ford’s later city-car sketches and became a reference point in press kits whenever the brand discussed advanced security systems. The single prototype still surfaces occasionally at Ford heritage events, serving as a reminder of early-2000s concept excess.
