Launched for just two brief model years, the 1960–1961 Ford Starliner brought fastback excitement to the top-of-the-line Galaxie range and disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived.
History
The Ford Starliner debuted alongside the restyled Galaxie lineup for 1960, designed to capture buyers drawn to the sporty rooflines seen on competitors. Only slight revisions—mostly trim and sheet-metal changes—carried the model into 1961 before Ford dropped the fastback body style, effectively making the Starliner a two-year-only proposition. When the next full restyle appeared in 1962, the Galaxie name continued without a fastback equivalent, ending the Starliner's run.
Design
Built on Ford’s full-size chassis, the Starliner wore the same chrome-laden front end as contemporary Galaxies but featured a distinctive rear roofline that swept into an integrated fastback decklid. Large rear glass and subtle side coves emphasized the sleek silhouette, while Ford badging and model-specific trunk scripts declared its short-lived identity. Two doors, six seats, and expansive trunk space underscored the blend of sport and practicality.
Fleet History & Legacy
Despite its brief sales window, the Starliner quickly gained favor as a starting point for 1960s stock-car racers and later for drag-strip special builders. Light for a big car and boasting strong V-8 foundations from the Galaxie family, surviving Starliners today show up at both restoration shows and vintage oval-track reunions, underlining Ford’s fleeting experiment with fastback luxury.
