Unveiled at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show, the Ford Shelby Cobra Concept revived the stripped-down roadster spirit of the 1960s AC Cobra to preview modern performance minimalism.
Design & Concept
Ford designed the Shelby Cobra as a purist roadster, free of windshield, roof and driver aids. At just 3947 mm long and 1395 kg, it channels the compact proportions of the original 1961 AC Cobra while using modern surfacing and materials.
Innovation & Purpose
The concept served as Ford’s design study for lightweight performance powered by advanced drivetrains, rather than a pre-production prototype. It has remained a show-only model from 2005 onward, demonstrating how Shelby’s lightweight philosophy could translate to the 21st Century.
Dimensions & Specs
Spec-sheet minimalism matches the visual approach: a 1905 mm wide stance on a 3947 mm footprint gives aggressive presence, while the 1395 kg curb weight undercuts many contemporary sports cars. Ford provided no engine figure, emphasizing form over hardware.
