Since the early 1950s, Ford has supplied purpose-built police variants of regular production cars. From 1992 onward the primary badge for these vehicles has been Ford Police Interceptor, later joined by the Ford Police Responder for niche roles.
History
Ford began modifying full-size sedans for police duty in the 1950s. The practice grew into a systematic line of fleet vehicles tailored for law-enforcement use. In 1992 Ford consolidated these offerings under the Ford Police Interceptor nameplate, positioning itself as a dominant supplier in North American law-enforcement fleets.
Nameplates & Variants
Two distinct lines now serve different operational needs. The Ford Police Interceptor series supplies frontline patrol and pursuit models, based on consumer Ford sedans such as the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, Taurus-based Interceptor Sedan, and the Explorer-based Interceptor Utility. Mid-2010s arrivals designated Ford Police Responder cover specialized roles—think F-150 Police Responder for rural or off-road duty but not intended for primary patrol use.
Engineering
Standard passenger cars are re-engineered with heavy-duty alternators, larger radiators, upgraded suspension components, and reinforced seating mounts. Calibrations for transmissions and cooling systems accommodate idle-heavy shift work and sudden high-speed response. Interior layouts accept radios, light-bar controllers, weapon racks, and prisoner partitions while retaining factory warranty coverage.
