Produced only in 1939, the Ford Model 91 closed Ford UK’s pre-war V-8 chapter and immediately gave way to the Ford Pilot, its direct successor.
Origins and Production
Ford UK built the Model 91 for just one model year. A total of 1,878 examples rolled out of British factories before production shifted away from civilian models in anticipation of war.
Design and Body Styles
Buyers could choose among three distinct body styles: a two-door convertible emphasizing open-top motoring, a two-door five-seat estate for practical family use, and a four-door four-seat saloon aimed at the British executive market of the late 1930s.
Engine and Chassis
A side-valve V8 displacing 3,622 cc provided smooth power, while the familiar transverse-leaf suspension — a design heritage of the Model T — kept complications low and ride character compliant. The car reached 134 km/h yet weighed just 1,320 kg, balancing relative lightness with the era’s expectations of V-8 thrust.
Position in Ford Lineage
The Model 91 ended the pre-war British V-8 series that began with the 1932 V8 18. It was quickly supplanted in 1946 by the Ford Pilot, rebranding and modernizing the same mechanical foundation for post-war buyers.
