Built exclusively for Australia, the Ford Landau ran from 1973 to 1976 as a bold two-door variant of the XB Falcon GT, offering V8 power in a high-fashion coupe package.
Origins and Production
Ford Australia introduced the Landau at the October 1973 Sydney Motor Show to give the local market a personal luxury coupe alongside the new XB Falcon. Only 1,385 units were built on the Broadmeadows line through 1976, making it one of the scarcest nameplates from Ford’s Australian division.
Design and Styling
Beyond the longer 4.79-metre body, the Landau gained a formal roofline, vinyl-trimmed C-pillars, hidden headlamps and wood-grain dash inserts. Bold 14-inch alloy wheels and a colour-keyed grille distinguished it from family-oriented Falcons, while the 1.97-metre width delivered a broad, muscular stance.
Performance
Under the elongated bonnet sat the factory-tuned 351 Cleveland V8, paired with a four-speed top-loader manual or three-speed FMX automatic. With 4-wheel disc brakes and 9-inch diff, the 1.72-ton coupe hit 201 km/h and recorded a then-respectable 7.6-second sprint to 60 mph.
Legacy
Used cars of the Landau became instant collectables; surviving examples swap hands at Australian classic auctions for figures approaching early Falcon GTs. Its rarity has made parts hunting a cult pursuit, and the nameplate re-appeared briefly in the 1980s show-car circuit, ensuring its fingerprint on Ford Australia history endures.
