Delivered for the 2012 model year, the Ford Focus Mk III advanced Ford’s compact offering with global styling, modern tech and the first electric variant, setting a fresh benchmark before the Mk IV arrived.
Design & Development
Jointly engineered by Ford teams in Germany and the USA, the Mk III dropped the dual-platform approach of its predecessor and rode on Ford’s global C-car architecture (C1 MCA). A wider track, fastback roof-line and sharper Kinetic styling unified European hatchbacks, North American sedans and Chinese-market variants under one visual identity.
Powertrains & Models
Engine choice spanned EcoBoost 1.0 L and 1.6 L direct-injection petrols, plus 1.6 L and 2.0 L TDCi diesels. A 6-speed dual-clutch Powershift became the headline transmission, while a 107 kW electric motor powered the zero-emission Focus Electric introduced for select markets.
Generations Context
The Mk III arrived as the third iteration in the Focus line, succeeding the 2004-2011 second generation and preceding the fourth-gen model launched for 2018. It marked the final European-assembled Focus sold widely in North America before product regionalisation returned.
