Launched in 1998, the first-generation Ford Focus replaced the long-running Escort and reset expectations for compact cars in Europe and North America with its modern chassis and striking New Edge design.
Market Launch & Production Timeline
Ford released the Focus Mk I to European customers in July 1998 and followed with the 2000 model year in North America from late 1999. European production ended in 2004, North American lines ceased in 2007, while Argentinian assembly kept the model alive until 2008 and Brazilian sales continued until 2009.
Greenfield Platform
Instead of another update of the aging Escort underpinnings, Ford engineered an entirely new platform—later known as the C1—and wrapped it in the bold, geometric lines of the “New Edge” styling direction. The moves gave the Focus class-leading interior space, sharp handling and Euro NCAP safety ratings that surpassed most 1990s compacts.
Generational Succession
The first-generation Focus set the template Ford followed for the next four global generations. It debuted under engineering leadership that hailed directly from the Escort replacement program, bridging company know-how from the 1980s into an all-new 2000s compact strategy.
