One hundred street-fair Fairlanes were turned into track weapons in 1964: the Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt became Ford’s factory-built ticket to the NHRA Super Stock title.
Purpose-built for drag racing
Built only during the 1964 model year, the Thunderbolt was a stripped, lightened version of the two-door Fairlane. Engineers sliced weight and added a high-strung 427 cu in (7.0 L) V8, positioning it to square off against Chrysler’s emerging Super Stock entries. Just 100 cars were completed—49 four-speeds and 51 automatics.
Track success
The Thunderbolt debuted at the 1964 NHRA U.S. Nationals, where a four-speed car took the stick-shift CLASS win and helped Ford clinch the overall Super Stock championship. That single-season record became the model’s primary claim to motorsport heritage.
Dimensions and construction
Measuring 5020 mm in length and 1840 mm in width, the Thunderbolt ran at a surprisingly trim 1,453 kg—thanks to fiberglass hood, fenders and bumper reinforcements, and the omission of sound deadening and back seats.
