Ford launched the sixth-generation F-Series in late 1972 for the 1973 model year. It was the last iteration built on the original 1965 architecture and was marketed across North America, Argentina, and Australia. Output continued through 1979, when the seventh-generation trucks took over with a fresh platform and square-rigged styling.
Design
Sharp-eyed fans know these trucks by the pronounced mid-door crease that earned the line its “dentside” nickname. Compared with the previous “bump-side” fifth-generation, sheet-metal became more angular, grilles grew bolder, and trim packages expanded to include upscale Ranger and Ranger XLT options. Cabs, beds, and chassis combinations stayed carry-over but looked noticeably larger thanks to wider track widths and higher hood lines.
Legacy
As the final trucks spun from the 1965 foundation, the 1973–1979 series bridged classic era styling with emerging emissions and safety mandates of the mid-’70s. Today, restored and patinated “dentside” pickups are fixtures at truck meets and on marketplace listings, prized for mechanical simplicity and a look that still defines the decade.
