Introduced in May 2021 and rolling off the line from April 2022, the Ford F-150 Lightning is Ford’s battery-electric re-imagining of America’s best-selling pickup, marking the first fully-electric F-Series truck the company ever sold. Its fourteenth-generation architecture and dual-motor layout brought zero-emission torque to a segment long ruled by V8s and turbo V6s.
Design & Dimensions
The Lightning shares its cab with the conventional F-150 but rides on a unique steel ladder frame designed to house a 1,575 mm-long liquid-cooled battery pack between the rails. Overall dimensions—5.91 m long, 2.03 m wide, 2.00 m tall—put it firmly in full-size territory, while curb weight tops just under three tonnes at 2,948 kg thanks to the battery housing and dual electric-drive units.
Powertrain & Range
All launch models feature dual-motor, four-wheel drive with front and rear permanent-magnet motors. Depending on the battery pack and trim, EPA-certified range spans 240 to 320 miles (390–510 km), comfortably covering daily commercial hauling and the typical American commute. A 400 A DC fast-charge inlet lets the truck add 54 miles in 10 minutes at compatible stations.
Variants & Commercial Model
Ford lists four trim levels from the commercial-grade Pro aimed at fleet users to the plush Platinum. A stripped-down “F-150 Lightning Pro” delivers the same drivetrain while deleting niceties like leather and panoramic roofs, keeping MSRP lower for work-truck buyers. Higher trims gain extended-range packs, 10 kW Pro Power Onboard, and BlueCruise hands-free driving assist.
Production & Sunset
The Lightning entered production at Ford’s Rouge Electric Vehicle Center on April 26, 2022, becoming the first pure-electric truck built at that historic plant in Dearborn. In December 2025 Ford publicly stated production will cease, ending a relatively short four-year run for the nameplate.
