Origins & Market Position
When it debuted for model year 2001, the Sport Trac became Ford’s first mid-sized pickup, slotting squarely between the compact Ranger and the full-size F-150. Designed for North American buyers who wanted the utility of a truck and the passenger space of an SUV, it targeted crew-cab versions of the Chevrolet Colorado, Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma.
Concept & Layout
Built on the Explorer SUV platform, the Sport Trac paired a four-door cabin with a shortened pickup bed, preserving ride comfort and seating for five while adding cargo versatility. Wheelbase and overall length stretched beyond the standard Explorer to accommodate the bed without ballooning into full-size-truck territory.
Production Run
Ford kept the Explorer Sport Trac in production for a single decade, ceasing after the 2010 model year with no direct successor. Over two generations—running through 2005 and then a refresh through 2010—it remained the brand’s unique answer to the emerging crew-cab mid-size segment.
