Marketed from February 1974 through 1976, the Ford Elite filled a niche in Ford’s North American lineup as an intermediate personal-luxury coupe positioned just below the Thunderbird. One short generation lasting only three model years would be its entire story before the LTD II took over.
A Brief History
The Elite debuted in February 1974 wearing the mouthful ‘Gran Torino Elite’ for its first season; Ford quickly dropped the Gran Torino prefix for 1975–76. It was conceived as an up-market companion to the Gran Torino and provided buyers a Thunderbird-style look without the full-size price or bulk, meeting surging demand for personal luxury that followed the 1973 oil crisis.
Design & Dimensions
Styled with a formal roofline, opera windows and stacked rectangular headlights, the Elite stretched a substantial 2 045 mm wheelbase within an overall length of 5 489 mm, width of 1 994 mm and height of 1 349 mm—dimensions that bridged mid-size and full-size categories. Its vinyl half-roof and wide C-pillars echoed contemporary Thunderbird cues while riding on the Torino chassis.
Short Run, Complete Replacement
After three model years and modest sales, Ford folded the Elite for 1977. The newly created LTD II essentially fulfilled the same role, inheriting the coupe market spot with refreshed styling and a clearer model hierarchy.
