History
Ford do Brasil launched the Del Rey in 1981 to anchor the top of its local range, replacing both the Ford Landau and the premium versions of the Ford Corcel II. Though engineered for Brazilian conditions, sales expanded into Chile, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Paraguay, keeping production lines in São Paulo busy for a full decade.
Design
With its 4 500 mm length, 1 675 mm width and 1 350 mm height, the Del Rey sat squarely in the large family-car class. Straightforward lines and squared lamps provided the conservative look favored by Brazilian buyers of the era.
Performance
Top speed is listed at 147 km/h, placing the Del Rey among the quicker everyday cars of early-1980s South America and matching its role as a flagship offering.
Legacy
When production ended in 1991, Ford do Brasil transitioned to the Ford Versailles Brazil as its official replacement, shifting platform strategy while capping the Del Rey’s ten-year tenure as Brazil’s pre-eminent domestic Ford.
