America’s original sport-utility, the Ford Bronco debuted in 1966 and pioneered the civilian 4×4 segment. After a 25-year hiatus, the badge returned in 2021 as Ford aimed to recapture off-road enthusiasts from Jeep’s Wrangler.
1966–1996 original run
The first five generations spanned three decades, each built on shortened F-Series platforms with removable tops and four-wheel-drive. By 1978 the Bronco had grown to full-size, sharing architecture with the F-150 yet keeping its adventurous identity. Production ceased after 1996 as buyers shifted to four-door family SUVs, leading Ford to replace it with the Expedition.
Generations and spin-offs
Between 1984 and 1990 Ford offered the smaller Bronco II on a Ranger chassis, foreshadowing today’s compact SUVs. The current 2021–present sixth-generation Bronco resurrects the two- and four-door formula with modular top designs. Ford further expanded the name: the 2021 Bronco Sport crossover and the China-market 2025 Bronco New Energy plug-in hybrid now carry the badge.
Legacy
From Baja racers to 1990s cultural staple, the Bronco cemented Ford’s reputation for rugged capability. Its 2021 revival not only reignited a classic rivalry with Jeep but also validated the enduring appeal of body-on-frame 4×4 design in an era dominated by crossovers.
