Ford B platform

Introduced in the late 1970s, the Ford B platform underpinned a family of popular subcompact cars for more than two decades. Its light-footprint architecture supported the Fiesta, Ka, Puma and even the Courier micro-pickup before retiring in 2004.
Development & Uses
Ford deployed the B platform across four distinct subcompact models spanning Europe, Latin America and other key markets. It carried the fourth-generation Ford Fiesta from 1995, the 1996 Ford Ka city car, the 1997 Ford Puma coupe and the Ford Courier micro-pickup, adapting each model to tight urban footprints while sharing common hard points and suspension design.
Retirement and B3 Successor
After more than 25 years in service, the B platform bowed out in 2004 when Ford introduced the more rigid and safety-focused B3 architecture. The B3 retained the front-wheel-drive layout and compact transverse powertrains of its predecessor but introduced updated crumple zones, stronger side-impact reinforcements and greater flexibility for future Euro NCAP requirements.
