Unveiled at the 2007 Detroit show, the Ford Airstream concept crossover wedded 1930s silver-bullet trailer cues to a plug-in hydrogen-electric drivetrain. Nearly two decades on, it remains a single styling and technology exercise rather than a production program.
Design
Ford and Airstream co-authored a silver, slab-sided body whose rounded corners, flush glazing and ribbed flanks consciously mimic classic Airstream trailers. The cabin features asymmetrical seats that swivel toward each other, slot-machine-inspired lighting rings, and a panoramic glass roof intended to give riders a cinematic view of the outdoors.
HySeries Drive
Under the floor sits Ford’s HySeries Drive system: the wheels are driven solely by an electric motor fed first by a lithium-ion plug-in battery, then by a compact hydrogen fuel cell acting as an on-board generator. In 2007 Ford quoted a 25-mile pure-electric range before the fuel cell seamlessly extended total range—figures that were impressive for the era.
Reception and Legacy
Journalists praised the bold design but understood the Airstream was a design vision meant to spotlight Ford’s early hydrogen research. No production roadmap followed; the concept still tours auto shows and design schools as an artifact of mid-2000s crossover thinking and Ford’s alternative-power experiments.
