For a single model year only, Ford released an unstripped, fleet-friendly big sedan called the Ford 300. Built in 1963, it sat at the base of the full-size range aimed squarely at buyers who wanted size without the chrome or cost.
History
The Ford 300 arrived for 1963 as an economy variant below the well-known Galaxie family, slotting into the line-up that also included the mid-range Galaxie 500 and the top-spec Galaxie 500 XL. After one production year, Ford shifted the entry-level space to the renamed Ford Custom, making the 300 a one-and-done badge.
Design & Equipment
Chromium was intentionally scarce—grilles, beltlines and tail-lamp surrounds appear in simple, painted form. Inside, the car echoed the Chevrolet Biscayne’s philosophy: broad bench seats, rubber floor covering and basic instrumentation without power accessories. Despite the spartan trim, the 300 shared the 1963 Ford shell stretched over 5309 mm, offering full six-passenger room.
Market Positioning
Ford pitched the 300 to police departments, taxi operators and frugal family buyers who needed large-car room and V8 durability on a tight budget. Its single-year status leaves it among the scarcer 1960s full-size Fords today, appreciated mostly by collectors tracking the evolution of Ford’s line hierarchy.
