Film Debut
In the 1974 movie “Gone in 60 Seconds,” Eleanor is a 1971 Mustang fastback painted gold with black stripes, described by director-producer-stuntman H.B. Halicki as the only car with a given name. The vehicle serves as the 48th and hardest car to steal, concluding the film with a jaw-dropping 34-minute chase that destroys 93 vehicles.
Remake Redesign
For the 2000 remake starring Nicolas Cage, Hollywood designers created a menacing 1967 Mustang GT500 replica, disguised as a custom Shelby GT500 ‘Eleanor.’ Hot-rod builder Chip Foose and Cinema Vehicle Services added exaggerated flares, PIAA lights, and nitrous-fed 5.8-liter V8s—outfitting seven identical cars to survive stunts. This version became the definitive Eleanor recognized on posters, toys, and video games.
