Prior to the 1964½ showroom sensation, Ford revealed a single experimental Mustang II concept at Watkins Glen in 1963, previewing the styling cues that would define a new class of sporty, affordable automobiles.
Concept Car Genesis
Ford constructed the Mustang II as a fully drivable show piece during 1963. While it shared the "two-plus-two" seating layout and front-mounted V8 architecture of the impending production model, its lighter bodywork, unique trim, and show-car detailing were never intended for volume manufacture. The vehicle’s mission was to gauge public reaction and to act as a rolling proof of concept as Ford refined the final production design.
Show Circuit & Later Life
After dazzling crowds at its October 1963 Watkins Glen Grand Prix debut, the Mustang II toured North America’s auto-show circuit for less than a year. Once the production Mustang arrived, the concept was demoted to test-mule duty before retirement. Today the only example sits in long-term storage at the Detroit Historical Museum, preserved but rarely displayed.
Design Preview
The Mustang II’s proportions and surfacing—including a long hood, short rear deck, and crisp side creases—previewed nearly every visual cue that would appear on the first-generation production car. The concept carried subtle grille and taillight variations, cleaner bumpers, and unique show-car wheels, yet its silhouette was unmistakably the nascent pony car America would soon embrace.
