For 1960 the full-size Ford lineup entered a transitional era: it sat on a longer 119-inch wheelbase, wore fresh sheetmetal, and faced internal competition from its own siblings like the Falcon and Thunderbird.
Design & Chassis
Although the bones—including wheelbase and engine selection—were inherited from the 1959 Ford, every exterior panel was new for 1960. The result was a cleaner, more modern look that kept the car visually distinct from the ’57 generation while still sharing underlying chassis architecture.
Body Styles & Features
Gone was the complex retractable Skyliner hardtop, but the open-air Sunliner convertible and a full range of sedans and hardtops filled the price list. The Fairlane name tag appeared on top-line full-size models for 1960–1961 before Ford reassigned it to the new midsize Fairlane in 1962.
Engines & Performance
Ford carried over the full engine roster from 1959, meaning buyers could choose among six-cylinder and several V-8 options—all paired to the proven basic chassis, giving familiar mechanical character beneath the new skin.
Generations & Succession
This 1960–1964 full-size series bridged the 1957 Ford with the eventual arrival of the Ford Galaxie. Once the Fairlane name moved to a new intermediate line in 1962, the big Ford continued to evolve into what would formally become the Galaxie range.
