1937 brought the first refresh after Ford’s all-new 1935-36 Model 48, giving buyers two distinct V8 engines in a sleeker body and pushing Ford through the pre-war sales race.
Powertrain Expansion
Ford split its V8 offering for the first time: the long-running 221 cu in (3.6 L) flathead V8 continued, now making 85 hp (Model 78), while a smaller 136 cu in (2.2 L) unit delivered 60 hp (Model 74) at a friendlier price. All engines fed through a single-barrel carburettor and mated to a three-speed manual transmission.
Design & Dimensions
The 1937 Ford used the same chassis as the Model 48 but wore a more streamlined steel body with vee-shaped grille and integrated headlamps. Width measured 1765 mm and height 1642 mm, resulting in a lower, wider stance than its predecessor.
Model Years & Codes
Ford assigned incremental model numbers keyed to horsepower. 1937 models were 78 (85 hp) and 74 (60 hp); 1938 became 81A and 82A; 1939 evolved into 91A and 92A. Constant spec tweaks and minor trim levels kept buyers engaged until the all-new 1941 Ford arrived.
