Launched in October 1937 for the 1938 model year, the Dodge Series D8 updated Dodge’s mainstream lineup in the depths of the Great Depression and replaced the earlier Series D5.
Model Year and Production
The Series D8 entered showrooms in October 1937 as a 1938 model and was built from September 1937 through July 1938. This nine- to ten-month cycle was Dodge’s standard practice during the late 1930s, allowing the brand to refresh its offerings annually and respond quickly to market fluctuations.
Global Variants: Senior and Junior
Two distinct ranges existed. The primary North-American-market cars—often called the "Senior" Dodges—came in a full array of body styles. A parallel "Junior" line, mechanically based on Plymouth and carrying modest Dodge trim, was built for Canada and numerous export markets, extending Dodge’s reach while controlling costs.
Transition to Luxury Liner
When production ended in July 1938, the Series D8 made way for the Dodge Luxury Liner line for 1939. The quick succession illustrates how rapidly Dodge updated its styling and technical details before World War II curtailed civilian production.
