Dodge Regent

Produced during the 1950s by Dodge Canada, the Regent offered budget-minded buyers North American styling cues fused onto a Plymouth platform. Today it stands as one of the clearest examples of badge-engineering tailored for the Canadian market.
Canadian market strategy
Faced with higher import duties and a smaller buying population, Dodge Canada created the Regent by mating Dodge’s bold, upright grille and bumper to the less-costly Plymouth body. This allowed dealers to advertise a ‘Dodge’ at a lower price point without developing a separate model.
Design & engineering
Inside the cabin and from the windshield back, the Regent was essentially a Plymouth—sharing glass, doors, and roof stampings. Up front, the twin-bar grille, hood ornament, and round parking lamps gave it the visual identity of contemporary U.S. Dodges. Mechanical components followed Plymouth’s L-head six-cylinder and Torqueflite-era running gear.
Legacy
Today the Regent is sought mainly by Canadian collectors and Mopar historians for its rarity and its textbook illustration of regional badge engineering. Surviving cars reveal subtle differences in trim codes and data plates that document Chrysler’s once-common practice of tailoring models to smaller Commonwealth markets.
