History
Conceived during Chrysler's post-1980 recovery, the Ram name built on a long Dodge truck heritage while signaling a clean break. The first generation retained familiar boxy styling but introduced computer-aided engineering to boost durability for both work fleets and civilian buyers.
Design
From the outset, the Ram wore Dodge’s bold crosshair grille and pronounced hood bulge. Over four decades the nameplate evolved through truck, heavy-duty, and later heavy-duty “2500” and “3500” variants with sculpted fenders and increasingly luxury-oriented interiors.
Legacy
By the 1990s the Ram had become FCA’s profit engine and a staple on U.S. roads, outlasting a shift in 2009 to the separate Ram Trucks brand yet still bearing the original Dodge DNA. Today it stands as one of the few domestic nameplates to span more than 40 continuous model years without interruption.
