For 1958, Dodge rolled out a full makeover of its passenger cars, enlarging and refining the 1955 platform’s three-tier structure and slotting in an even more luxurious flagship just months into the year.
Design and Lineup
Dodge kept the 1955 three-nameplate strategy but gave every body style a trim, grille, and chrome revision. Buyers chose between the low-priced Coronet at the entry point, the mid-range Royal, and the ornate Custom Royal, while the new Regal Lancer arrived in spring 1958 as the ultimate, fully-loaded offering atop the range.
Market Context
Arriving during the final flourish of 1950s tailfin excess, the ’58 Dodge targeted the booming buyer appetite for ever-plusher interiors and flamboyant styling cues. The Regal Lancer’s mid-season launch capitalized on emerging luxury trends without forcing a full platform redesign, stretching the existing chassis one more model cycle before the sweep of 1959’s styling revolution.
