Unveiled on Citroën’s stand at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Citroën Revolte re-imagined the utilitarian 2CV for a low-emission future, mating supermini proportions with electric-gasoline hybrid tech.
Concept & Debut
The Revolte arrived as a bold styling exercise rather than a production promise. Citroën used the Frankfurt stage to display a three-door, four-seat micro-hatch just 3.68 m long, highlighting the brand’s pivot toward compact electrification in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Unlike typical show cars, it carried functional plug-in hybrid hardware buried beneath its avant-garde bodywork.
Design & Styling
Fluorescent paint, scissor doors, scissor-hinged tailgate and quilted crimson upholstery gave the Revolte a deliberately rebellious appearance. The roofline was chopped and tapered like a classic 2CV’s, but rendered in stretched neoprene and aluminum, underscoring Citroën’s intent to merge retro cues with 21st-century materials.
Hybrid Drivetrain
While exact outputs were undisclosed, the show placard listed a rechargeable hybrid system combining a small combustion engine with an electric motor. Citroën claimed short-range EV running and brisk urban performance suitable for the European supermini segment, though no performance or economy figures were released.
Legacy
The Revolte never reached showrooms, yet its hybrid blueprint and dimensional template informed the later DS3 line. More importantly, it signaled Citroën’s readiness to experiment with electrified city cars years before such drivetrains became mainstream.
